“Mom, can I please have another chance?”
I probably get this question at least once a day. It is irritating. If my kiddo is asking for another chance, it usually means she/he knows they don’t deserve one.
The evil Mom flesh within me wants to scream, “NO, you cannot have another chance. You’ve had plenty of chances. I am done with chances!”
The trying-to-be consistent Mom within me wants to gently, but with authority say, “I am sorry, but you have already exhausted all your chances, and now you have to deal with the consequences of your behavior.
The saved-by-grace-alone daughter of the King knows that without second chances I wouldn’t be here today. I wouldn’t be in ministry.
I know that we need to parent consistently so that we build trust and so on. But I also know that we need to surprise our kids with grace.
Surprise those who don’t deserve another chance with… grace.
Honestly, none of us deserve second chances. But God. God loved us while we were yet sinners… against Him. Deserving nothing. Enemies. And He chose to give us life with Him by sending His Son Jesus to die for our sins.
Not only has God given me a second chance for eternal life, but He is so gracious to grant second chances in my everyday life.
- When I yell at my children and see their hearts crushed by my tone and my words.
- When I fail to thank my husband for the way he provides for us and partners with me.
- When I mis-prioritize my time and spend hours on Facebook and only a few minutes in the Word.
- When I forget to call the friend who desperately needs someone to talk to.
All of these misses and failures can make me feel like an absolute loser. I want a do-over. And I find myself, just like my children, asking for another chance.
Lord, can I please have another chance?
Though I may have to deal with the consequences of my behavior, He is always consistent with His answer.
He surprises me with grace.
